The IEC is currently offering an ESL course focused on working in the healthcare field. Intermediate and advanced ESL students can enroll in this course to learn more about this important and growing job field.
You’ll learn about different healthcare settings and find out about the types of positions and career pathways in the industry. You’ll also learn vocabulary related to the systems of the body, including the skeletal and muscular systems, respiratory system, digestive system and more.
The English for Healthcare class is offered on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 1:30 to 4:30 through spring term. Contact the front desk to register.
Intro to Interpreting
We are offering an Intro to Interpreting course for advanced ESL students. You will learn about the ethics and requirements of interpreting, how to practice and improve interpreting skills, and common vocabulary and practices for interpreting in legal, medical and educational settings.
This course is offered in partnership with the University of Minnesota's Translation and Interpreting program. We are thrilled to have Professor Scott Homler as a co-teacher for this class. It’s a unique opportunity for students who are fluent bilinguals to take the first step into the exciting career field of language services.
Students who successfully pass this course with a minimum of 90% attendance will receive a certificate upon completion. Intro to Interpreting is offered Monday through Thursday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. The class is currently full, although we are keeping a waiting list with the possibility of offering this class again.
English for Work
We also have an English for Work class for beginners and low-intermediate learners. The class will cover topics such as how to find a job, job applications, job interviews, work schedules, how to communicate appropriately with one’s boss and co-workers, worker’s compensation, and how to read and understand a check stub. The class meets on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 1:30 to 4:30. Contact the front desk to register.
